Successful camping trips require planning. The most important step is that you find a campground whose location and amenities meet the needs of you and your family. Be sure to make a reservation for the dates that you want and can travel. Then your planning will entail what to pack. Packing consists of food, camping and cooking gear, and equipment for your activities. Before you begin packing, plan out options for each day of the trip and different times of the day.   • Unplugging

Whether we like it or not, unplugging needs to be planned for and guidelines on phone usage decided before the trip begins. Whatever is decided, technology-free time often leads to the age-old complaint of – I’m bored. Planning this first activity will create a smoother transition. Plan for some quiet time activities of reading, coloring, or crafts for the car ride and when you first arrive.

  • Campfires

Campfires have a magical allure. Late afternoon on your first day at the campground, get everyone involved in building the campfire. All ages can assist in the process. Twigs, sticks, branches, and rocks need to be gathered. An area needs to be prepared; then a shallow pit in the center of the campfire needs to be dug. Rocks need to be laid to form the pit. The combustible fuel needs to be placed on the pit. Then the ceremonially first lighting!

Once the campfire is lit; there are other family activities that can occur around the campfire. Your family can cook on the fire; try experimenting with a Dutch oven for a new activity. Telling stories around the fire is always entertaining. If you have any musical talent with you, singing along to the strumming of a guitar is lots of fun when camping. No one will miss their music or earbuds!

  • Campground Pursuits

Finding a campground with amenities and pursuits that will interest your family is important. This should be part of the decision-making process. Camping lets you literally be in nature. The opportunity to connect with, appreciate, and learn more about nature will be available to you.

Many campgrounds have walking/hiking trails within their facilities; others are located near a multitude of trails. Having a variety of trails near you will ensure that there are options for everyone in your family regardless of age and physical stamina. Hiking is an energizing activity. To add interest to your hike, you can create a scavenger hunt. This can add a competitive challenger and a fun way to treat your family members more about nature.

After your hike, time on the water is a well-deserved treat. Boating, swimming, or fishing are all great choices to explore while camping. Some campgrounds have boats and fishing gear that you can rent. This will let you and your family try new activities. Depending on the water that you are camping near, you may also have the opportunity to go jet skiing, paddleboarding, water skiing, or rafting.
