The First Radios
Guglielmo Marconi invented the first radio prototype in 1894 to help ships communicate at sea. Instead of voices, radio operators had to use morse code to communicate.
It wasn’t until 1919 that listeners heard the first human voice on a broadcast in the history of radio.
The Beginning of Commercial Radio Industry
In the 1920s the first radio broadcasts aimed at consumers hit the air. Music lovers all over the country could tune in and listen at the same time.
Then, in 1923, the two-way radio came onto the scene and revolutionized communication. Two-way radios can last for decades, but click for equipment repair if you have an older model that needs help.
1930’s and 1940’s Evolutions
The main advancement for radios of the 30s and 40s was the invention of the transmitter. With the new portable radio models, people could take their favorite radio host wherever they went! The smaller models came at a much more affordable price point so more families could enjoy their favorite radio station.
1950’s and 1960’s Evolutions
During the 50s and 60s, radio became a preferred method of public communication. The National News started broadcasting so citizens could keep up on the news without having to read the paper.
The Space Program lent its advancements to commercial radios during this time as well. Their technology allowed radios to fit into earphones or on the side of a pair of glasses.
Modern-Day Radios
These days you can find touch screen radios in your car and waterproof radios for your shower or poolside enjoyment. Some radios come with visualizers, lights, and other features to make the experience more fun. There’s nowhere you can’t take a radio, so you can tune in when you want to!
