What to Look for When Choosing High Visibility Work Shirts

High visibility apparel is a requirement for construction workers in the US. It helps protect them from traffic while working in dangerous work zones. But it’s not the only industry that can benefit.

This includes warehouse workers, first responders, and sanitation workers. Does your company fall into one of these categories? Or are you in an industry where high visibility is key to the safety of your workers?

Here are some things you’ll need to consider when choosing high visibility work shirts.

What is High Visibility Clothing?

Also referred to as hi viz or hi-vis, this type of clothing is usually brightly colored and reflective. It’s classified as a type of personal protective equipment (PPE). People wearing them are more visible in dangerous environments.

Things To Look for When Choosing High Visibility Work Shirts

The main purpose of these garments is to keep workers safe. When buying high visibility shirts you’ll need to ensure they meet the standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

Meets Safety Standards

There are several types of high visibility clothing based on the ANSI standards. Each has a different level of visibility.

Class 1 clothing usually includes a shirt or vest with two components. It should have vertical reflective stripes and a fluorescent background.  It provides a basic level of visibility. It’s usually worn by off-road workers

Class 2 usually has extra materials for greater visibility. Vests and shirts in this class have contrasting colors. Public Safety workers as well as those who do Roadwork wear this class of high visibility clothing.

Class 3 clothing should have workers stand out regardless of their background. It should also protect them in a variety of conditions including lighting, weather, and traffic. It provides the highest level of visibility. It usually consists of materials placed across various body parts. Workers in this class should use high visibility pants along with a hi-vis vest or shirt.

The Right Colors

High viz work shirt colors based on ANSI requirements are:

  • Yellow-green
  • Red
  • Orange-red

Any one you choose must be fluorescent making them easily visible to motorists.

Reflective Material

Reflective material is a requirement for night work. Any retro-reflective material must be:

  • Yellow-green
  • Orange
  • Silver
  • Yellow
  • White

Fluorescent versions of any of these are also an option. The minimum requirement for visibility is 1000 feet.

Climate Appropriate

There are visibility jackets available for colder weather. Conversely, for hotter climates, you’ll need to choose a breathable material. The key is ensuring your workers are comfortable.

Customization Options

Although not a requirement, high visibility clothing providers that provide customization can be a plus. This can give the added touch of professionalism. It also helps to make your company stand out.

High Visibility, Better Safety

Worker safety should always be a priority. Many industries require employees to work in dangerous locations. High visibility work shirts are essential in these conditions.

When choosing them you must ensure they meet industry requirements. The best high visibility shirts are ones approved by ANSI.
